Names
You wonder sometimes why anything is called what it is... I'll give you an example: Buffalo Wings (Buffalo's don't have wings, or do they, lol?) which is chicken, I just don't get some of them. I'm sure if I investigated the history of it, I'd understand, or maybe I wouldn't.

Re: Names
I use to wonder, but since the internet and search engines, I don't wonder anymore, I look up everything that crosses my mind when I'm online....
I even looked up why police are called cops, I had a pretty good guess, but just wanted to double check that.

Re: Names
Now would that have been in Buffalo, what state was that, or was it actually buffalo meat in a spicy sauce?

Re: Re: Names
QUOTE (JCSOS @ July 31, 2008, 13:18)The name for spicy wings is Buffalo as that's where they were invented.
Seeing as I'm the only regular here from Buffalo, I've taken the liberty of sharing the story of what we in Buffalo call Chicken Wings, known to the rest of the world as Buffalo Wings. This is from the Anchor Bar Website where they were invented. Here goes:
On a Friday night in 1964, Dominic Bellissimo was tending bar at the now famous Anchor Bar Restaurant in Buffalo, NY. Late that evening, a group of Dominic's friends arrived at the bar with ravenous appetites. Dominic asked his mother, Teressa, to prepare something for his friends to eat.
They looked like chicken wings, a part of the chicken that usually went into the stock pot for soup.
Teressa had deep fried the wings and flavored them with a secret sauce. The wings were an instant hit and it didn't take long for people to flock to the bar to experience this new taste sensation. From that evening on, Buffalo Wings became a regular part of the menu at the Anchor Bar.
The phenomenon created in 1964 by Teressa Bellissimo has spread across the globe. Although many have tried to duplicate Buffalo Wings, the closely guarded secret recipe is what makes Frank & Teressa's the proclaimed "Best Wings in the World."
And now you know...the rest of the story. Good Day!

Re: Names
What irritates me about "Buffalo wings" is that they get advertized as [example} 20 pieces. Folks, this is one half of a wing. So, you're paying for 10 whole wings.

Re: Names
With all due respect to the folks at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, "Buffalo Wings" is a marketing tool to sell what are among the less desirable parts of the chicken. "Tuna" is a more appealing name used to sell what was once called Horse Mackerel, and lately I've noticed that what I always called prunes are being sold as "dried plums" Its all marketing.

From what I've read, it's mainly heads from cows and goats. Varies by country. Of course, you could---Google it.

SPAM is pork shoulder and ham.
I find this somewhat confusing as it's all pig parts.
You can visit the SPAM museum in Austin, MN then you can see really old SPAM
