Does Anyone Talk Anymore?
Certainly, email and texting have become important means of communication in today's world. But is it our only means? In my business, so many people communicate only by email. They dont answer phones and respond to voice mails by email, rather than returning a phone call. Or the other side to that is that I've actually seen people in the same office, literally a few feet away from eachother talking via Instant Message.
The other day, I was having lunch with a friend and noticed 2 twenty-something girls sitting at a table near us, both with their cell phones in hand texting away the whole time we were there. I swear they were texting eachother because neither spoke a word the whole time!
Color me old fashioned, but I'd rather call the person I want to talk to, actually have them answer their phone, state what I'm calling about, get that person's response and be done with it.
Am I the only one who feels like this or am I just off on a pointless rant?

Re: Does Anyone Talk Anymore?
I have to deal with students parents face to face on a daily basis, but many of the school/teaching staff talk to each other by phone or email, i will walk round to their office as i like to see them face to face and have a chat and a laugh

Nothing can replace a good face to face chat. I like to see who I am talking to or at least hear their voice. You cannot read emotions into e-mails.

One of my nephews texts his mum from his bedroom, asking her to take him up food and drinks etc. The silliest thing is that she actually does take them up.
Technology is great, but people shouldn't lose the art of socialising and human to human interaction.

I agree with both you and HBG. So many things can be misconstrued without the benefit of voice inflection. Not to mention that texting in particular is contributing to the dumbing of our society. So many people spell and write so poorly to begin with, but when things like "m gr8 how r u" become the norm, and all punctuation is ignored, what chance do these kids have of getting decent employment when they grow up? I know I'm probably over-gerealizing. And, I'll admit, I text, e-mail and instant message, but I always do so with proper language, spelling and punctuation. And oh yeah, the lost art of proof reading.
Ok, I'll shut up.

Re: Does Anyone Talk Anymore?
See? This is what Im talking about. I called a client the other day and of course, got no answer. So I left a voice mail message and I asked the person to call me back and left my phone number. 3 days later, I get an email saying that he was sorry for missing my call and asking what he could do for me. Is picking up a phone so difficult?

Re: Does Anyone Talk Anymore?
I gotta say, yes I prefer voice to voice directly by phone, and face to face....but my weird hubs, he doesn't listen to anyone, and will start to bicker after a couple of words, tunes out other people....sometimes, it's best if I just sit down, get out entire sentences and thoughts in a brief email, he won't mention the email, deletes it right after reading it, but I sure can tell by his behavior, he read it all right...
I've known people who were able to resolve old feuds and grudges...finally...just by writing or typing because when they try by phone or in person, they cut each other off and become too defensive too quickly...a letter or email does allow each party to state their peace with out interruption.
