Based on real events..
Based on real events, Based on a true story, etc...
Did you ever read a book, see a movie "based on a true story" then wonder how much creative liberty was taken from those "real events"?
Did you ever get curious enough to research it a little? If you did, were you impressed with how close the movie or book came, or disappointed that the "true story" fell way short of the Hollywood/media hyped up version?

Re: Based on real events..
the book "no-one here gets out alive" based upon the life of Jim Morrison and the movie "the Doors" both did remarkable adaptations to his life. Val Kilmer did an AWESOME portrayal of Jim.

Re: Based on real events..
You're right,Val Kilmer was so good in that movie!
"Boys Don't Cry" with Hillary Swank...I think the movie really stuck to the original real story.

Re: Based on real events..
I think there maybe a good hint with these things in how it's phrased...I'm taking a good guess that "inspired by..." means very loosely based, and "Based on..." may hit much closer to the truth mark?

There is a movie based on true events which took place in Oklahoma. It is called "Heaven's Rain". The victim, also stars in the movie, as his father.

Re: Based on real events..
well we've all seen about 5 versions of Wyatt Earp, the one with Kevin Costner had a lot of Hollywood imagination in it, same with Billy the kid(who wasnt even left handed) the photos taken then were in reverse, like looking in a mirror. In the photo it appears as his gun is on his left, in reality, its on the right. the most factual one of seen is the film "Band Of Brothers" about the 101st Airborne

Re: Based on real events..
I just have to mention how incredible the "Rose" was....very loosely based upon Joplin and they put an exclamation point on that. But, the vocal performance by Bette Midler was no less than incredible. How she sang with such a "rougher style", and such heart and kept from blowing her voice is amazing. So this is a tribute to her acting, her amazing talent as a vocalist....the movie was great in it's own right, I am just not saying it was even supposed to be accurate...Her version of "When a man loves a woman, and "stay with me baby" are awesome. The sound mix in the movie is great, and many times that isn't so when it's a live band..from the bass guitar to the snare drum and all in between....one great movie.

Re: Based on real events..
Inspired by, based on only means that there is something in the story that is from the real story it can be as little as a title of a boat (Titanic) or the basic story line and character names. There is nothing that says if you use this much of the real story use this word vs that. Unless you know the entire true story and all the facts I wouldn't take what you see as a true depiction. Above it all the movie business is just that a business. Remember if the movie the Titanic was all about the boat and the mechanics and not about the love story that in reality never happened, people would not have gone to see it.Just enjoy the movies and shows and try not to worry about the truth when you watch them.
As for the books being made into movies.
Fiction or otherwise the movie would need to be a mini series at very least in most cases to get all the details of the books. The other thing is that some things don't transfer well from the written page. Example:In The Twilight series the Edward character is described as Auburn hair , skin that sparkles like diamonds in sunlight and eyes that change color based on his hunger and diet. He is also supposed to be the best looking guy on earth. Good luck trying to cast that person so it meets every woman's and mans expectation.

I love Laura Ingalls Wilder and the Little House stuff. You're right, the TV series was just loosely based on the books, but there is a pretty good movie series on Halmark Channel that is true to the books.

Re: Based on real events..
Ash try the library when they sell their used books I saw them there for $1 a piece. I also got the soft cover new ones at a dollar store around her. I have I think the first 3 or 4.
The library sales are great though because they sell all the donated books so cheep and we read a lot.You can also rent the digital version online now if you have an e-reader or want to read it on your computer or cell phone.Much cheaper than buying the damn hard cover books.

Re: Based on real events..
Ash, the Little House movie is like a three parter, Hallmark usually runs it on a holiday weekend and all three parts (2 hours each) take a good chunk of the day for sure.
It is so different than the series, but true to the books.
At first, if you've watched allot of the TV series it can take some getting use to. I like the Mr. Edwards character allot better in the movie.

Re: Based on real events..
I watched part of this movie, 'The Runaways", based on Cherie Currie, Lita Ford, and Joan Jett. I read the band members granted the producers the rights to their life story. However, I thought the movie to be weird. I guess I felt if seemed more like a movie, then an actual depiction of the band.

Re: Based on real events..
i saw it too, i thought Kristen Stewart did a very nice job portraying Joan Jett. the movie was based on Joan's version of the story of the band. Jett co-wrote the screenplay as well.
i wish they had dealt more with Lita Ford's Role in the band. apparently Lita didn't want anything to do with the movie.

Re: Based on real events..
i have the doors movie too , that's a good one .
Mr Edwards was only mentioned twice in the books the first time was in Indian territory in Kansas where they both made cabins to homestead , and the grass fire and the Indians coming and taking pa's furs and tobacco and the bugs eat ting them alive , then they had to leave the homestead ... something in the treaty fell though. then they went to walnut grove and got the fever and the grasshoppers came and ate everything.then pa went west to desemet and got another homestead , hes was working for the railroad and was going to file a claim on the place and some other guys tried to grab it, Mir Edwards then showed up and there was a big brawl at the land office. then Edwards went west. lol
i hear ya on the libary and their book sales , and we are looking for one or two books , the mrs will buy them all we have enough books a whole wall full , i donated a bunch of vhs cases to them and some tapes so we can all enjoy then and some dvd too ,some one decided to put them for sale i wasnt to happy with that idea.....

Re: Based on real events..
Yeah, this three parter movie that they run on Hallmark, starts out when they pack up and move across to Kansas, all the stuff about the Indians, Edwards helping build their cabin, the land office... is all in there.
The woman who played Nellie does a one woman comedy tour now, it's called "Confessions of a Prairie Bitch"...pretty funny, there's clips of that on utube.
