Wildlife
I live in a rural subdivision but there used to be a lot of wooded areas close to my house. Deer, wild turkey, and other wildlife were abundant there. Unfortunately most of those areas have been cleared to put in new houses. This morning when I peeked out my window there was a small doe in my front yard. She was so pretty but I could tell she was very scared. She nibbled on some grass, then would perk her ears and look around for danger. She stayed in the yard for about 5 minutes before moving on. I just hope she did not end up getting hit by a car. I love animals of all kinds and I hate it that we are slowly taking away all of their habitats.

Re: Wildlife
You might be surprised at how little cover deer need to effectively stay out of sight. In central Illinois, in places where there is no timber to speak of, deer can be found in the tall grass in cornfield waterways, and have been known to bed down in evergreens planted around farmhouses. Deer were essentially extinct in Illinois 100 years ago, now some folks think there are too many.

Re: Wildlife
This year, we've let the back portion of our huge yard go unmowed in areas...and the deer we once thought we gone apparently are coming back now because of it...I haven't seen them but we've seen the signs of them.
On my kitchen table right now, is a bird identification book and binoculors...I love wildlife watching far more than people watching.

Re: Wildlife
I hear ya Chazz. Sometimes I prefer to be around animals instead of people. Animals have no expectations of you. They just take you as you are. If I had a big farm or ranch I would be overrun with animals of all kinds.

Re: Wildlife
Hey, some of my happiest memories are from when I was living way the hell out in the country raising chickens, living across the way (upwind) from the hog farm and feeding the cattle farmer's mule Ethel over our shared fence. I had a pet turkey named Mr. Biggin.
I've had bobcats yards away from my backdoor, red fox were common, eagles and herons along the river, I've seen fresh bear tracks along the sandy creek shore, hog nose snakes, wild turkeys, and each day, before the roosters first crowing, hearing the coyotes yowl and howl.

The St.Louis suburbs has a sever deer problem...people want them gone because of the damage to the landscaping but they don't want them killed, they want them tranquilized, airlifted or trucked somewhere else. It's always a big debate. Relocating that many deer every year is outrageous as far as expense, but hunting and killing them disturbs them.

Re: Wildlife
That is a problem in many areas Chazzy. My feeling is that if we would quit cutting down their habitat areas then we wouldn't have it. I believe in killing for food if necessary and I do like deer meat, but to kill for sport. I just don't see the fun in it.

Re: Wildlife
In my rural area, people hunt for food, if they absolutely have to, if feeding their family depends on it, they will hunt out of season, and we all understand that...they are still respectfull of the conservation laws and the conservation and care of animals and land, but when the babies need food, and the factory lay off hasn't ended..we understand that.
The city people..ugh...it's a hobby...and when they do kill a deer, most of the carcus is left to rot and they only take a small prime portion of their kill. The next year, they are giving away and even throwing away last years kill so they have freezer room for this years hunt.
That we don't understand.
