Re: BATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
get yourself a bat-house, almost like a birdhouse, but it's mounted on a high pole, outside...not sure how well it will work for you, but my buddy had a problem with bats, and he bought one, it seemed to work.

Re: BATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Slightly but when I was growing up in Granville Ma, we had an old house (built in 1910), we had an attic full of bats. During the daylight hours, I would go up to the attic to play and I saw 100's of bats hanging from the ceiling. I never paid any attention to them. They never bothered me.
At dusk, they all came to life and flew out god knows what opening and went off into the night. All I know is we could sit outside after dark, especially around the in-ground pool and not be eaten alive by mosquitoes . The bat's one contribution was they gorge on mosquitoes!! Otherwise, we had no problem with them other than the odd one ending up hanging in a bedroom which was easily extricated with a towel.

Re: BATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You'll have to find out where they are getting in. It doesn't take much of a hole either, then when they have left for the night, you'll have put some mesh or other material to cover it. I have the same problem, but only have one or two living in my eave. The down side is the bat crap can build up and cause problems.

Re: BATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The do-it-yourself method....You have to have a bit of a stake out...you'll need to see them fly out at dusk or return at dawn to see how they are gaining entry into your attic. Then seal up those areas and the bats will just have to find another roosting area.
Or...you'll need to call the professional critter people.
They will inspect your attic and house, find the entry/exit areas and seal them up for you.
The bat houses like LandH posted about will work much better if you take away their primary home in the attic first. You can buy the bat houses or find free plans for building them on the internet.
There is that rabies threat with bats, but for the most part they are harmless creatures.

Re: BATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cool, i even made a bat house for them must not be high enough as they haven't got the hint yet, i know were they come out they crawl around a piece of siding facial, which is a sharp edge, i sit on the picnic table at dusk and lost count at 20 there use to be two,the Attic is a crawl space and there is a hornets nest up next to the flue. the droppings are getting kinda ripe above the room here lol...i much rather have dragonflys eatting my bugs

Re: BATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We've got hornets in the attic too, they get in through some area of our brick that needs tuckpointing.
I'll be very happy to finally get rid of the hornets, they sure have a nasty sting!

Re: BATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
chazzy get one or two of them bug bombs ya lock the top down and set it in there that should take care of them i used them in the church they were in a storage room it was of good size and there was a cloud of them in there,he came over and asked me if i knew how to kill then i gave him one and i got volunteered , and i didn't want to get too friendly lol .
i use 3 or 4 of them to kill spiders in our place,we heat with wood so ya get bugs so we put a couple on all 3 floors and they do the job , i cover my fish tanks and put the cats in the garage and gas the whole place
oh i was told too about moth balls, they will drive out mice and bees and the bats I'm going to try it after i put the bat house up higher in my elm tree.
good luck, c n k

Re: BATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
once a bat got into the VFW where my dad was a member...they let it fly around, until it decided to interupt the pool game dad was involved in...dad swung the pool cue knocked the bat right outta the park...pretty good shot. their sonar is pretty sharp. we used to try throwing Frisbees (the ones that glowed in the dark)at them to knock them out of the sky...we came close a few times, but they always seemed to fly right over them at the last second...

Re: BATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
are them the same hornets we have there sure like soda cans ,small black and yellow ones and they like the trash too.....we wee logging in the woods making firewood i stepped on a moss cover log crossing to some tree the loggers left behind, we found out why out came a cloud that was just abuzzin and we had no way out but back though again and both of us were stung 4 or 5 times i dropped the saw and they chased us back to the pickup and jumped in ,they were bouncing off the windows and i had to drive off a few mile till we lost them.the saw was still running and it ran till dark before we went back to get it.....
well back to the bats I'm just amazed how the cats start flying to get these guys and last year it was a nightly thing grab the fish-tank net and snag em out of the air. i had a couple i was thinking they might of been the same ones night after night i should of put a x on em to see with a marker i got up one morning and the cats took care of the smart one nice bloody stain on the hardwood they must of got bored with it and i thew it in the trash.....
i had a moonglow Frisbee's too but the dog ate it lol

Re: BATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The hornets we have are the large red/orange ones, they can make a person sick for days with a sting, and the sting feels like you just electrocuted yourself.
There's something I'll have to google later on, the difference between wasps and hornets.

With hornets or yellow jackets, you have to address the problem after dusk. That's when they are in their nests. I have drilled holes in the outer walls behind the nests and emptied multiple cans of Raid Hornet Spray into the hole. Next morning, you'll see a little bit of activity but a short while later the few survivors will abandon the area all together. It works everytime! Remember.....after dusk!!!!

In addition to eating bugs, at least bats don't fly over your clean car and poop on it.

Re: BATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Around here, people go to great lengths to get those big ole hornet nests to use as a decorative piece in the homes...they will precariously use ladders, climb up to the high tree branches and spray the hornets nest, then return later to take it down...and yes, mamy, many stories about this practice going very wrong.
Bats, are usually well liked and encouraged here. There's a bridge in Austin or Houston (?) where there are millions of bats living and people gather at dusk and take tour boat rides to see them fly out. I've ween the videos, it is quite a site.

Considering NC has Bat preserves, I'm sure they must, or one of many areas that do have them.

Re: BATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We've always seen the bats flying about the street lights at night, feasting on the bugs that the light attracts.
Today on my front porch, I found a new cluster of Potter's wasps nest...first I've ever seen first hand, and the nests are so freakin' cute, they look just like little minature clay pots..

Re: BATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've got paperwasps, mud dobbers, I guess the potters wasps are probably a type of mud dobber cuz they do both build mud nests...these potters nests look just like pottery vessels, they are shaped round with a neck(opening) and a turned lip edge...just like tiny little pieces of pottery..
I have one cat severly allergic to wasps, he's damned near died several times before he finally learned to leave the things alone. When he would get stung, he'd crawl off and hide, and by the time I realize he's hiding and not just napping somewhere, he would be in really bad shape.
