Actually, it's for protection. Hair is often found around mucous membranes to try to keep irritants and bacteria out. That's why we have eyebrows, eyelashes, beards, mustaches (women have hair there, too, ya know), and pubic hair. Sorry, but I'm a biology kind of person and just know random stuff like this.
