The Drive-Inn
I know, we got big screen TV's, DVD's, media rooms, surround sound...but...it's dusk, there's just a light breeze and around 70 degrees out and I'm thinking nothing would be better than getting the movie experience at a Drive-Inn Theater.
There still one open and running about 30 miles away...ahhh, the smell of the Concession stand food, packing up a cooler, picnic basket and mosquito repellent.
Those old speakers on poles and fresh air. Sit in the car or spread out a blanket.

Re: The Drive-Inn
How I would just LOVVVVE, to go watch a movie on the "Big Screen" again, now that's what I call the classic screen. Chillin' back in your car, speakers attached to the windows, with a big container of buttered popcorn... oh the memories!!!!

Re: The Drive-Inn
The old Drive-Inn near me, has been there so long. I think it's great that it's still up and running too. It's one of the last of the remaining few in the state.
The screen has been tore up by a few tornados over the decades but everything about the place still has that classic "Route 66" feel about it.

Ya know, my parents took us kids to that drive inn when I was tiny, and allot of my high school dates were there, it's just cool that the place is still there.

Re: The Drive-Inn
i don't know if there are any left here...mom & dad were one of the first to back in...with 8 kids....they'd back the old station wagon up....throw an old mattress on top, and my two older brothers would watch from up there, and the rest would sit in the back, some on the tailgate. next thing we knew. every one was backing their pick-up trucks in...

i've often wondered what would happen, if someone ever decided to open an indoor drive in theater...we have indoor car dealerships here, so why not indoor drive-ins?

Re: The Drive-Inn
Ah yes, the drive in, where I drove through the entrance by myself only to have two friends jump out of my trunk a short time later Why you ask? To avoid paying the admission charge! Oh, the fun we used to have!!!
What about the food at those same drive ins? It sucked but I was too stupid to realize it. I was too wrapped up in the moment!
I even "forgot" to take the speaker off the window as I started to drive away......oh yeh, I ripped the speaker post out of the ground. Then, I just had to take that entire speaker and post home as a souvenir. Man, what a chump I was, huh?

Re: The Drive-Inn
Love the drive-in. Got some good loving there too back in the day. We have a drive in close to us that opened 2 years ago. It did so well that last year they added a second screen and now show 2 movies. It is terrific. The sound now comes to you over your car radio. No more clip on speakers. If I'm feeling frisky it is still nice to get a little loving under the stars.

Hey I couldn't "perform" knowing that lame ass speaker wasn't hanging on my drivers side window!

Well what I mean is without that speaker hangin' there, I would of course make the attempt to give you the whole 2 minute earth shaking performance but my heart just wouldn't be in it!

That would be kinda cool! I'm sure I would miss that outdoor under the stars thing though, but it would mean no mosquitos!

Well that's great, I wonder if any more new ones have opened up any where else? I really think it's a part of the past that we need to bring back.
Unlike in a seated indoor theater, people chatting in thier own cars, a ringing cell phone, or crying baby/brats wouldn't ruin your own enjoyment.

Wow, can't believe they didn't do the trunk check, at least they would take notice if your cars back end was a little lower than it should be, keep an eye on your car and bust you when the friends jumped out!

It's true isn't it? The drive-inn theater gave us some of our very best childhood/teen memories!

Going to a drive-in was on my list of things-to-do when I visited the States. Sadly, there just wasn't enough time to do everything on that list.
I wish we had them in England, they look like great fun.

Yes there are LH. I did a Chazzy and googled, I found one just to the north of you. I think there is only 6 or 7 left in the state.

Re: The Drive-Inn
Lib, if ya can, keep the drive inn on your list!
Wikipedia has an incomplete list of drive-inns listed by states.
One Missouri drive inn on the list is fairly new and opened in 2004.

Re: The Drive-Inn
The drive-inns usually had a nice playground right in front of the screen, you could go early and let the kids tire themselves out before the movie started.

not many or none left in wisconsin ,they all been turned into parking loys for target or whatever.we use to go to one every weekend ...fogged up windows and making out in the backseat...sometimes that was hard to do at 4 bucks a car load and no need to hide in the trunk.we use to stop on the way and get some sub sandwiches to eat, they were better the the drive in food, not that there was anything wrong with the hotdogs and popcorn and soda...those were the days along with gas at .79 cents....lol

Actually, the $1/car full took a whole lot of the fun out of going to the drive in for me at least in the formative, non dating years. Having two of my friends in the trunk waiting to get out of that cramped, fart infested trunk while I made sure to hit every f*ckin' bump and rut leading to the rear fence, with them saying "fuck you Bill you prick"!! That was priceless! The $1/car load ended that fun at least for me anyway!! Those were the days........
