If it happened to you....
The Police motto is "To protect and serve"
After reading this story, how would you feel if this had been you? Would you feel protected and served, or violated?
*****************************************
LAKEVILLE, Minnesota (AP) -- A Lakeville man says he feels violated after two police officers woke him up at 3 a.m. to tell him his door was unlocked.
Their surprise visit was part of a public service campaign to remind residents to secure their homes to prevent thefts. Usually, officers just leave notices on doors.
But they went further in Troy Molde's case on Thursday. Police entered the house where four children under 7 were having a sleepover, and then went upstairs to Molde's bedroom.
The officers told Molde his garage door was open, the TV was on, the keys to his truck were left in the ignition and the door to his house was ajar.
A police spokesman says the intrusion was justified because the officers' initial door knocks went unanswered, and they wanted to make sure nothing was wrong.
He says the kids inside -- Molde's two sons and two nephews -- were afraid to wake their dad, so the officers went upstairs.

Re: If it happened to you....
The devil is in the details. What security measures did this man take to protect family and property?
Those police officers could easily have been someone else with a not so friendly motive. These police officers should be commended.

Re: If it happened to you....
Yep, I see that side of it, hobs...4 children under the age of 7, door not only unlocked but ajar?
I think he ought to be happy that he wasn't charged with some sort of child endangerment or neglect...but the strictly legal side of things, I'm sure some will feel that it's a civil rights thing for cops just to enter your house...but then again...a door ajar would seem to be legal motive for them to do so.

Re: If it happened to you....
I think I agree with Hobs. When the police could see that there were 4 children there without adult supervision and the door ajar there certainly could have been something very wrong. They made a judgement call as officers so many times have to do and although sometimes it is a wrong call I believe this one was a good one.

I agree - the door ajar certainly is a concern. Thank god it was the cops and not one of the many housebreakers that have been killing innocent people in Phoenix lately. Kids need good reminders too that cops are good people and security is everyone's job.

Re: If it happened to you....
Lakeville PD has really stepped up the efforts to warn people about safety. There has been a rash of home invasions and thefts in that area. I think they did the right thing by entering into the home. Just maybe this clown will lose the "it only happens to the other guy" attitude. He should be thankful that it was the cops that woke him up, and not some tweeked out meth head.

I think there's allot said in the very last line of the article.
The man's children were "afraid" to wake thier dad...something's wrong in that house for sure...
