Father's Day
Father's Day is coming up...do you have any memories, or any thoughts to share about your father?
I think one of my happiest memories of my daddy were Saturday afternoons watching movies on TV with him. He was rarely ever home and awake and a Saturday afternoon day off for him, I can count on one hand how often that happened, but when it did, it was so special, he'd get a glass gallon jug of root beer from the A&W, cook us burgers, served with a bag of Fritos and we'd watch movies. I didn't' grow up watching Disney, Bambi, or anything like that, never saw A Disney movie till I was an adult! We'd settled in with root beer and Fritos and watched his favorite movies...Planet of the Apes , Patton, Dirty Dozen...

a good time with my dad was when he was teaching me to shoot a rifle , or hunting, spent many weekends with him doing guy stuff. Still i love to target shoot & hunt, so it is a fond memory

Guess one of my favorite memories of my dad would be when we would go out before Christmas and find a perfect "cedar tree" to bring home and decorate.  He always let my brother and I pick. Unfortunately, he was an alcoholic so I have an awful lot of bad memories too but I don't dwell on them. I prefer to remember the good times and I miss him a lot.

My daddy worked in the iron ore mines, and he worked hard for us. I remember how his hands would crack wide open and bleed. I remember that smell him, his clothes and his lunch box had from the mines and I know he saw horrors in those mines, he saw men maimed and men die, he nearly lost his legs once himself but in spite of all he saw, he still remained a kind gentle man. I remember how much I loved it when he brought me home rocks...all kinds and colors of quartz crystals and fool's gold.

i remember a time after dad retired from the grain elevator, he got a part time job, working at Green Giant (during pea season) i got to work with him, side by side, inspecting the peas, before canning. we used to tease the old ladies, by throwing peas at them...

I remember once when momma was in the hospital after giving birth to my baby brother, daddy was left at home to get us off to school, he didn't know what to do with all my curly hair, and ended up putting lots and lots of spit curls completely around my face ya know...Betty Boop style and yep, with real spit...I waited till I had walked several blocks to mess it up, didn't want to hurt his feelings, didn't wanna spend the day humiliated either!
