Re: why is it ?
Well my friend, Im from the East and dont consider you, or anyone else for that matter to be dumb, unless they prove otherwise. And the area they live in doesnt define their intelligence. Trust me, Ive met and dealt with ignorant and rude idiots all over the country. Ive also met and dealt with some of the warmest and kindest people all over the country. So if some ignorant elitist insulted you, consider the source. Theyre probably not worth your time.

Re: why is it ?
Agreed. There are some very nice people all across this country. But, one thing is for sure, prejudice and bigotry are not dead. I, too, have traveled all over this country. In every sector, there are always those small percentages of bigoted, prejudicial idiots that simply are not worth my time. In PA, if you are not from the northern part of the state, you are a flatlander. If you are not of "the faith" here locally, you are an Englishman. So, the prejudice and bigotry are all over the place.

Re: why is it ?
Yeah its kinda funny. I haven't had anyone ask me or say anything to me about it but have heard through others who has met people from east or west coast, that wondered if we have electricity, let alone vehicles.

Over here we have "the great north/south divide" apparently, but I have friends all over this country, welsh, scottish, irish and english, black, white, green or yellow, at the end of the day it is their problem, they have the narrowmindedness to judge people by very limited standards. Feel pity for them, for they are missing out on some wonderful friendships, warm and true!!

Actually Hobscotch, Im very familiar with where you live and thats where I found some of the nicest people. The worst part about that area is the smell in the air when its 90 degrees and humid! You know what I mean! Another area with great people was Little Rock. I had heard that Arkansas was a bit backwards. Although, when I told people there where I was from, they started talking about things that were in the news about New York City, which is about 700 miles from me. And a 15 minute cab ride was less than $5. 15 minutes in a cab in NYC is $35!

Mostly its, how we can live with the cold all year. They are absolutely shocked when I tell them that we can get over 100 in the summer. They think we have perma-frost here.

Dave, you're a good man! People will be people no matter where they're from, who they are, etc. Picking the flowers from the weeds is my best policy.

Re: why is it ?
Dave, it is probably for the same reason that a lot of folks think that everyone who lives in Tennessee is a "hillbilly." Yeah, we all go barefoot, drink moonshine, and live in 2 room shacks. LOL

I'm proud to be hillbilly! My own mother was raised in a log cabin in the woods that her daddy built himself. My father was also raised deep in the southern woods of Missouri.
Like LandH said, the media just might have something to do with it. When I think of hillbilly, I think of good hard working self sufficient people that respect the earth and nature, not the barefoot, drunk, lazy and ignorant characters portrayed on humor postcards you mail back from your vacation in the Ozarks.
We all are ignorant when out of our element. I've had a good laugh more than once when city folk out for a country drive, would be knocking on my door excitedly to tell me I had a whole flock of wild turkeys (or eagles????) in my front yard and I would have to explain through my giggling..."Those are'nt wild turkeys (or eagles????) dear, that's my neighbors flock of Guinneas"
Or when someone visiting would ask what's wrong with my roosters cuz they are crowing in the middle of the day....hey ya'all, Roosters do that, rooster do not just crow in the morning,,,geez...they communicate with the flock all day long by crowing....
