I was thinkin' about this type of thing today. WE've gone from a society that values quality and service to society that seems to fall for everything.

I did research this online last week, you pay a one time price for the device, and the $19.95 a year. The reviews I read were from messages boards of people who have bought and used it, and reviews from several electronic/gadget magazines. From these I gathered this... and that some just found it a little inconvenient to boot up their computer whenever they wanted to make a call, but the reviews were very good on call clarity, as good if not better than cell phones or landlines, and no dropped calls.
Of course, maybe given more time for more consumers to use and review this item, then maybe there will be more cons than pros to it...but so far...the reviews are pretty good.

Re: as seen on TV...what a scam........
Most of the Voips I've used, have expired their free offers, skype was free for over a year I think, but still have some pretty good deals, I know a few that use webcalldirect, but it's like the others, it's only free for a time, then a low rate applies...there totally free deal is usually an introductory "free trial" type of thing...right now I'm using a totally free voip, a newer one...later down the road it may also end the free calls and only offer packaged discount rates too.
As far as a gadget goes, the majicjack from what I've read up on it so far, it does work quite well and for many may be very well worth the price, but may not be a practical choice for others. As long as I can find free temporary voip deals online, I'll use 'em. Some of the free voips do however, once the word spreads, get so overloaded, your calls get cut off and you may at times have to redial through your computer several times on one call.
