Landlines
JCSOS's post about wireless phones prompted me to ask this. Who has gotten rid of landlines in favor of wireless phones? My first one was back in 85, a bag phone that plugged into the car's cigarette lighter (back when cars had cigarette lighters). In fact, at the time they weren't referred to as wireless or cell phones, it was a car phone. Ive been through all of the changes over the years with lost calls, areas with no service and incredible roaming charges. In fact once I was out of town for a week and racked up a $1000 service charge.
But anymore, with no roaming charges and MUCH better service, its the only phone I have, both at home and for my business. I got rid of all of my landlines (except for my fax machine)back in '03. And almost everyone I know has Verizon, so I almost NEVER pay for any minutes. I've been all over the country and into Canada and cant even remember the last time I was in a bad service area. Anyone else totally ditched the traditional phone?

Re: Landlines
We haven't had a landline for several years. Landline is for DSL only. Ma and I have a family plan for our cell phones.

Re: Landlines
Currently, I'm investigating into a wireless phone carrier. One good thing about having a wireless phone is the freedom and convenience. I would never return to a land line, there's no need for unnecessary expenses in this day and age.

Re: Landlines
Well, I agree with Tica about the extra expense of a land line. I would do away with ours in a heartbeat but hubby insists that we keep it. Certainly not worth arguing over.

Re: Landlines
A word to the wise: In an extreme emergency (i.e.hurricane)a landline (NOT hands-free) may be the only phone where you can get service. Nearby satellite towers can go down, emergency crews may take over the frequencies, and electricity may be out. Heard it from a hurricane survivor.

The same would go for landlines. As poles go down, so do the land line wires, as they are also on the same poles as electric wires and cable wires. The only thing that is not affected would be the emergency communication centers, ei police, fire and rescue, that have their own back up power generators. They would be able to transmit via their 2-way radios. This is only a generalization, as other factors may or may not come into play.

Just a word of warning if you are considering a landline through the cable company. When the cable goes out, most times your cable company phone service goes with it. I've learned this through personal experience. The cell phone will the most reliable phone you'll have.

Re: Landlines
I've been reading reviews on the "magicjack" .... I could see where this would work for us, just about all of our phone calls are made from home and our prepaid cell phone is primarily used for use away from home.

Re: Landlines
Never heard of that one Chazzy. Is it available in other areas? The only other phone service that I can recall to "vonage". But to me that is still a little high priced.

Re: Landlines
Magicjack, google it and you can find it online, and reviews about it too...it's a usb device you plug into your computer, then your phone jack plugs into it, you register this, and get a phone number...you can call anywhere anytime for free. The device has a one time cost of about 40 bucks, and I think it's about 20 bucks a year.
It's small and portable, you can take it with you to use on your laptop, then plug in any phone jack, The reviews say the calls are as clear or more clear than a cell phone, and no dropped calls...the only thing is that you need a computer to use it...but like I said, just about all of our phone calls are made from home anyway.
