Photos always help, if you're worried about being recognized, you don't have to show your face, if you'd rather not show it all, (naked nudie stuff) then only show what you are comfortable with, photo profiles do get more attention and responses, even if the photo is a picture of your elbow!
...and if you just hang out in the chatrooms, you'll find people to chat with.
