Catcalling: creepy or a compliment?
That's the title of the story I'm reading on the CNN site this morning. The highlights of the story are...
*********************************
Story Highlights
*Spring seems to encourage men to yell comments at women
*Many women find the catcalling very offensive and frightening
*Some women take photos of offenders and post on sites
*One woman says unless she did get catcalls, she'd feel dumpy
*******************************************
Some excerpts from this article...
""I call it street abuse," said New York filmmaker Maggie Hadleigh-West, 49. "It's unwanted attention and invasion of space."
In her 1998 documentary "War Zone," Hadleigh-West confronted catcallers and filmed their responses. Many of the men literally ran away to avoid talking to her about why they whistled or made a provocative comment."
*********************************
"A lot of men have no idea that women don't like being talked to in this way," she said. "It never crosses their mind, and yelling doesn't educate them. If you yell, they often don't understand why you are upset and so they take it personally."
******************************
What kind of rection do you think men are seeking by catcalling at women that are complete strangers? Do they actually mean it as a compliment, or is it just a juvenile male gang thing?
If you're a woman, does it bother you NOT to get that kind of attention,?
Is it just annoying or harrassing when you do?

Re: Catcalling: creepy or a compliment?
As a guy, I don't like it. I feel like I would be degrading the woman. But I will do it to Ma, or a close friend, and they know its all in fun. My son did it yesterday when we were out side working on his truck. Needless to say he got a good ass chewing, right on the spot. I think a nice smile and friendly "hell-o" works much better to get their attention.

Re: Catcalling: creepy or a compliment?
a simple "hi, how's it going?" seems to work best for me...

Re: Catcalling: creepy or a compliment?
Catcalling just doesn't seem like something grown men ought to be doing, I dunno....just seems kinda juvenile...what does a group of men or a man expect when he yells at and catcalls at a stranger on the street...like we're gonna drop everything, run over to them and do 'em right there on the spot?
