Good example?
I'm watching the news coverage of China in the wake of that 7.9 earthquake recently. I saw the aftermath of that school that collapsed on the children. I saw no evidence of any reinforcing bars sticking out from any of the collapsed and broken pieces of concrete walls. The walls just come tumbling down upon the occupants. This is just another example of their rush to be included in the modern world......no building codes.
Hell, most of China is an earthquake zone but they choose to build like crazy with no concern for commonly known and practiced building techniques and minimum building codes. Why do you think the country can manufacture goods for export so cheaply? With no pollution concerns or standards and no minimum wage to contend with, the manufactures can just let it rip and full speed ahead!
Any China defenders amongst us?

Re: Good example?
No...
China has an abysmal human rights record, from stifling uprisings to horrific population control. I wouldn't think for a minute that construction is regulated outside centres such as Beijing where poverty is rife.
Trouble is... us. Western society is gobbling up every industry and export China has to offer, feeding that rapid economical boom which benefits only the Chinese government and business leaders.
The longer we buy 'made in china' products, the more we compound the poverty and quality of life of millions of China's citizens.

Come on ladies, don't 'cha just love your cheap designer knock off handbags? Shoes? Clothing?
Sorry to hit home there but it's sh*t like this that feeds their economy. With no recognized manufacturing or labor standards, China will shoot way ahead of the US, at least at the manufacturing end. They can get it made very cheaply....not right but cheap!!

Re: Good example?
Hey, there's allot of things in our economy that can be described from unsavory all the way to atrocious...this country is not without it's own shame...and for China, I'm still pissed off about the lead painted toys and the tainted dog food.

Re: Good example?
I feel the west does have some indirect responsibility for the thousands of earthquake deaths in the country.
Because we buy products of any kind from the economically booming China, we have contributed to the rapid expansion and need for construction within the country.
The speed of this western-induced boom has led to considerable syphoning of funds from construction in rural areas to ensure that export demands are met. Consequently many buildings, including schools, have been badly built and unable to withstand the earthquake.
The result... a current estimation of 15,000 dead. The sad thing is with China's one child policy, some villages have had an entire generation wiped out completely. Imagine that in the town or village you live in, imagine the future of your home town wiped out in one event.
All because our governments seek to forge out cheap trade and selfish business links with the country, and our greed makes us unable to say 'I refuse to buy this on principle.'

Re: Good example?
Eh...refuse to buy on principal...is that even possible anymore?
A label may declare "made in the USA" but the components and materials come from everywhere. A garment may have been stitched up in a USA plant, but where was the fabric milled, the thread spun, the buttons made....same for any product.
How may big ole flat screens, plasmas, cellphones, DVD players, and all our electronics are made entirely part by part solely in this country?
OTC drugs are made from imported ingredients. We all know about the pet foods, made right here with imported ingredients.
I don't think a consumer can change what's wrong with the world with their paychecks anymore, maybe by voice and vote but they cannot afford to do it by shopping.

Hell yeh, if we stopped buying products that were not made on American soil, we wouldn't be buying much. I just bought a new Vermont Castings grill. The grill was a 2008 model.....the first year that the company is having China manufacture them for the company, which used to manufacture those same grills in Canada up 'til 2008. All grills are now being built in China. Geeeez, I wonder why?
All my flat screen tv's are of Japanese manufacture. So where am I supposed to buy tv's manufactured here?

Re: Good example?
TV viewing is so over rated. Try reading a good book or spending time with friends.
