QUOTE (kamarel @ September 13, 2011, 22:40) QUOTE (newbie1011 @ September 13, 2011, 22:10)I'm from NY I couldn't even begin to go into how we pronounce things and the differences between where you grew up in NY.
Tennis shoes
The only time I ever use the term "tennis shoes " is if I were to actually want shoes for playing tennis! You all use tennis shoes as if you all play tennis in those shoes. They are called SNEAKERS. There are different types if you would like, they have running, walking, tennis, shape up, athletic, even water versions and more but they are all SNEAKERS.
GG, My son went to school in Rhode Island for a while and he told me all the kids from the area and all the Boston kids would talk so strange. Certain words really bugged him for some reason. If you ever heard his father(My ex-husband) talk you would find that funny. Boston accents irritated him but his father has a stereo type NY accent and uses all the stereo type words "Yous guys", "Aint". "Turdy turd" and the word Fuck is every other word in his vocabulary. At least he didn't say "Aks"(I think that is how you spell all these words. I have a hard enough time spelling the proper word!)

A Boston accent, most of the time, drops the sound the, "R" makes in words, unless it's in the beginning of it. Rhode Island is stuck between the rock and the hard place. I can imagine what they are like what with bordered Virginia pronouncing the, "A" as "O". I once went to Virginia with a buddy and his friend there was astonished that I had no idea what, "cords" (cards) were. He kept askin' me if ever ployed cords?! I kept tellin' em only when the powa was off...

Re: Pronounce it
I have an in law from the south somewhere(really southern-bell accent, really NY attitude. I love her.lol) But she has lived in Virginia for a long time and married my nephew in law. She kept trying to tell us when she visited NY someone showed her the NUDE beach. For about half an hour we couldn't figure out what the hell she was saying. I love the way she says naked.lmao But when she finally got frustrated and said "The beach where they take all their clothes off!" We just died laughing. For years we teased her about it.
I have friends in Cozumel Mexico. They speak English very well. And normally don't have a problem understanding people. There is one huge exception to that. The one guy said to us one day " I just can't understand those Southern people and the ones from Texas are just strange. " We just told him not to worry we all have the same problem with them so it isn't him at all. lol
