DirectTV or Dish TV?
Right now we only have the very basic of cable but we want to check into other options, I know there is satilite TV, and the latest I guess is TV through your DSL or phone line?

I've been trying to put some time into comparing Dish TV and Direct TV, just wondering if anyone has any imput on what to look out for, look for as far as pros and cons, fine print deals and all that.

Use to have Dish 500. It was great picture and sound...Way better deal then cable at least around here. Weather plays a bit of a roll in Dish type systems. It does have issues that may cause loss of service with bad weather like heavy snow or rain or at times even really heavy cloud cover. Enough about that-sorry to ramble! I think that Direct TV has more of the Sports Channels but I might be out of date on that info. I can tell you the people at Dish TV were always very friendly. I did my own install and maintaince. That may be it's week point. I use to have yearly issues with cables and connections. No biggie but it would have sucked to pay someone to fix it all the time!

Hmmmm....how bad is the weather interference with satellite?
Here in tornado country, I do kinda depend on local weather bulletins and their Doppler....if the interference is that bad, upgrading the cable or even checking into the phone line thing might be a better option?

It seems that might be worth checking into. Around here it went out during every summer thunderstorm, and heavy winter storm. It might not be a good choice to depend on for weather updates.

Re: DirectTV or Dish TV?
I do know that snow build up on the dish can cause problems. Haven't heard anything else. I realy enjoy the cable I have here, even though I don't get to use it much. I also have the cable for internet so that's something else you may want to concider.

For local weather, you could just look online from a close station.

Re: DirectTV or Dish TV?
I had dish for quite awhile and it did loose signal during HEAVY rain etc but not all that often, suppose it depends on your surroundings and the signal strength you have at your particular house. I wouldnt worry about it too much on the weather issues... seems to me if the weather is bad enough to cause a problem and it were tornado type weather you'd probably want to be someplace safe before the signal ever got lost because the weather would be literally on top of you by then. plus even in the worst cases i never lost it for more than several minutes at a time.

like jj said though i did most the install, setup, etc myself and dont know what that cost if someone else does it. But even so i spent time upfront to get good cable and secure things to the house properly etc and over the couple years i had it i never had any problems with connections.

I'd have no problems suggesting dish to anyone.

p.s. i like to rely on local radio for severe weather updates anyhow
