Perhaps the three truisms of Divorce: Sex, Money, and Communication???
Boring Sex, Not enough Money, and No Communication????

Much of mine failed as I felt trapped. I've always been an ambitious person and felt I was being held back while in a relationship. That and the last one mentioned above.

I'll add...lack of committment, couples will not work through the really difficult problems when divorce is so easier.
Maybe even add lack of trust.

I should think more fear than a lack of trust. People become complacent and apathetic because they are afraid to take that next step in life. Why make the effort to have better sex, or to better manage money, or to have meaningful communication? Why make the effort when you can always just do what you have always done.

Familiarity can breed contempt. Deep down, I don't think some people are cut out for long term relationships .

good point, Lib...i agree. and to add, they're not cut out for breeding because they dont' have the smarts, inteligence and maturity to be parents.
in theory: opposites attract...at least in chemistry...but reality is ..that ain't always so. and often is "incendiary."

Re: What makes a long term relationship fail
The legal divorce term "irreconcilible differences" makes sense...you exhaust every other option trying to work through it all untill there is just that last resort of going your seperate ways.

I've always felt marriages should be contractual, with options to renew every 5 years or so.
(Personally my own has lasted through almost 6 renewals and I wouldn't have changed a thing.)

Re: What makes a long term relationship fail
Lack of communication is a big one... I married the Great Communicator, and in the beginning he taught me a lot about what that meant. Unfortunately, I thought that meant that if there was a problem, he'd let me know. He didn't, until it was too late. Not really willing to say that's his fault or mine... but the lesson learned is that occasionally even the "Great Communicator" can't find the words.

Re: What makes a long term relationship fail
I think it could have to do with expectations... Did you expect too much or not enough? Once you stop believing you can count on someone to come through for you it is hard to have any kind of partnership.
