Ships
In looking up battle ship locals, I discovered that starting in ww1 the US experimented with ships made from concrete. This continued into ww2. The program was canceled because of weight.

Re: Ships
yes, is was quite a idea, cheap & fast to build wihout using up much needed steel, although the main idea was to make docks to load & unload big ships

Re: Ships
I misspoke. In reading from the site, they were discontinued in WW1 bcause of weight. They resumed building them in WW2 because of improvements in concrete technology. Yes, some are now used as piers and even reefs.

Re: Ships
I've seen a PBS documentary on those ships!
I love military history, and battleships are just way cool!

Battlships have always been my favorites. Other than Pearl Harbor, there are 4 in the continental US. Laporte,TX--Mobile, AL--Camden, NJ and WIllmington,NC I'd like to take a trip and explore all of those. I'd be interesting to see the differences.

Re: Ships
Hell, I'd be thrilled just to go see any one of those.
Submarines are pretty amazing too.

Re: Ships
PBS runs some pretty good series and shows on military history with allot of actual footage and photos.
The battle of Meramac and the Monitor during the Civil War really got me into the whole battleship thing and the raising of the first submarine "The Hunley" got me started learning about that.
