Re: probate court
I agree...lawyer's have a bad rep, and we may not like them, but we are fools if we don't use them!

Re: probate court
I would agree. I not a big fan of some lawyers either. There are those who are real bottom feeders, scum of the earth, but then there are those whose very existence are very vital.

Re: probate court
Sorry about your problems, boomer -- you're right, sometimes these situations are so much more complicated than you think they're going to be. A good lawyer makes all the difference. A bad lawyer just makes the situation worse.
I've got two brothers who are lawyers -- both of them are hard-working regular guys who care about what they do. Of course, there are plenty of scummy ones out there who take advantage of people, or who care more about billing and winning and making money than about doing the right thing... But look at it this way -- by definition, one out of two attorneys on a case are on the "wrong" side.
Biggest disappointment for my little brother was when he found out that "environmental law" meant defending the oil companies, not fighting them. Wasn't long til he switched to defending schools and helping people write wills and set up small businesses. He's struggling a bit to make ends meet, but I'm VERY proud of him!

Re: probate court
The bad rap is mostly self inflicted, but probate can be a tough one. A good accountant is also a wise thing in such matters.

Re: probate court
Sometimes, I think maybe we do need and want that kind of lawyer who wants to win, win, win...sometimes it just makes sense to have a shark type on your side...but other times you're better off with the ethical one with a heart.
I mean, if you want a honest and fair judgement then you want a lawyer that understands his job is to do the right thing, but I suppose if I were looking at some serious jail time or something like that, I'd want the cold blooded shark type, the one that just wants to win.

Wow, excellent observation!!! So an aggressive, ambitious lawyer is the devil in a designer suit... unless he/she's on your side.
