Irish people
I notice at this time of year everyone seems to be Irish, I even met a black fella in DC who claimed to be irish, and that raised an eyebrow...
I'm just wondering exactly how irish those of you claiming to be irish actually are? People, especially Americans, seem to love having any connection at all with Ireland, no matter how distant and it's a subject of some amusement to a lot of people who were born here and raised here

Re: Irish people
My father's side is Welsh, my mother's side is sooo Irish but we are talking genealogy here and not legal citizenship.
I am a US citizen from Irish descent.
The Irish immigrants in my family tree are generations back.
Between the early centuries of slave trade, nomadic people, etc...blacks can be found in allot more history and culture than just the US and Africa. Not many,...hardly any of us can claim pure ethnicity if you can trace your family tree back far enough and we are so beyond pigeon holing by skin color.

Re: Irish people
In this country, I really don't think it's a matter of the Irish celebrating an Irish holiday, it's a celebration of the Irish heritage in this country.
It is quite acceptable for everyone to be Irish for one day here on St. Pat's day!

When you think of all the crap the Irish immigrants went through when they arrived in The US it's hard to image how it's now desirable to be. I guess that should give others hope that someday all nationality's may be celebrated with open arms...or maybe not!

Re: Irish people
That's so true, what so many of the Irish immigrants went through in Ireland that brought about their need to immigrate, then the tough time they had here...they're a sturdy stock for sure!

Re: Irish people
My grandmother was Irish and boy did she have the temperment to match. She had auburn hair and was a bit of a handful. Funny, I made her mad on a regular basis, one strong willed red head to another, lol.

Re: Irish people
I think no one in modern times (The last hundred years) properly represented the Irish women like the actress Maureen O'Hara and some of the roles she played, especially in "The Quiet Man"....Ahhh..Maureen...gorgeous strong woman!
