Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder----

Saw an ad on tv this morning that was promoting a booklet that taught the parents of afflicted kids how to deal with teachers and such. That is how to get the teachers to realize the kids talents. :D It's not from a drug company either!!!!

Some of us are truck drivers---

Re: A.D.H.D.
Looking back, I know there were a few of my classmates in grade school that I'm sure suffered from this type of disorder...maybe they could have benefited from meds or counseling, therapy...but back then the major action that I'm sure they would have done them the most good....patient teachers and a feakin' "No Bullying" rule...these kids were practically terrorized at school....

Yes, some of us were. Mostly, I was sent to shrinks and told by them to "grow up"

Re: A.D.H.D.
I worked with some kids like that when my kids were young. The trick was to be patient, change their diet, and teach them to focus on what they were doing...

Some of the kids I work with were actually allergic to refine sugars. Take that out of their diet and you saw changes in their attitudes and being able to focus.

I think it was just meant to be and perfectly normal and natural that we all are unique and individual... and I'm not much on drugging children into conforming drones.

Re: A.D.H.D.
Chazzy, you said it all. That is the big problem in today's school systems. The kids are all suppose to conform to the assembly line style of education that we have. But if your child is labeled as having ADHD/ADD, that will follow them for the rest of their life, even if they don't have it. All the school has to do is put into the child's record and either you have pay for a very expensive evaluation, at the time of our kids, it would cost around $1200 for them to be evaluated. Oh yea, and the parents have no control over it. When our son was in pre-school classes, the instructors were trained in working with ADHD/ADD kids. When we told them of what the school told us, the pre-school teachers were appalled. Its the schools that want the kids trained to conform to the schools standards or medicated so they will conform.

I hate to think where we would all be without UNtreated ADHD people through out history...I'm sure most were inventors, artists, musicians, philosophers, etc...

Re: A.D.H.D.
I have always considered myself at least some ADHD, but I have learned to work around it, finish college and be a successful parent. I believe my son has the same issue, but with patience, time and some life skills he can do very well.

Re: A.D.H.D.
My son has it and we tried the behavioral stuff...we tried the meds for a brief period but he hated them. His father should have been on them too, it would have helped with his impulsiveness.

Re: A.D.H.D.
My son went through hell the first few years of his school life. Was constantly in trouble and found it very difficult to make friends. The school he was at initially were no help as hist first teacher saw it as a reflection of her teaching abilities so was totally unhelpful. We finally got him assessed, having had to involve our MP to get anything done, and he was started on medication.

The first day he spontaneously went and got a book of the shelves and sat for 2 hours and read it cover to cover. He then spent the afternoon doing art and craft activities which he had never been able to do previously. All of this was totally unprompted by us.

My point is that it isn't about behaviour, it's about concentration. My son had desperately wanted to do these sorts of activities but hadn't been able to and the frustration was incredible for him. His life has been transformed as he can now choose to do mental activities that require concentration or go wild in the garden climbing trees or pulling the legs of spiders - he is a boy after all. Previously he didn't have that choice.

My middle daughter had a rough time in school. She couldn't sit still no matter what we did. Some part of her had to be moving all the time. We took her to our doctor and he tested her and found out she was allergic to the man-made sugars. He wrote a note informing the school. We requested that at lunch(they were on the free lunch program) that she not be made to eat the fruit they put on the trays unless it was fresh fruit. The school told us she had to eat it. One day she came home and we heard her coming a block away. When she came in I called the school and talked to the principal. I told her to listen and then told her if my daughter had to eat the fruit again I was going to let her have my daughter for the night. She could stay up half the night trying to get daughter calmed down. My daughter never had to eat it again. The canned fruit they gave in the lunches was over half man-made sugar. Once we limited her sugar intake we saw the biggest change in her.

Re: A.D.H.D.
My nephew has ADHD and he has always refused medication as it just makes them drowsey.
He used to be aggressive and he has no fear. He never bullied anyone but didn't like being told what to do. He is now 19 and controls it well, he is still quick tempered but has learned to walk away from trouble. He still has no fear, which in some cases is good, but bad in others.
