Guns
As a brit I would be terrified to have a gun in the house, let alone own one.
As US citizens, how would you feel without having a gun?

Re: Guns
i dont have guns to feel safe.. and in truth if a break in should occur i'd hope my guns are locked up and inaccessable to everyone. and i just dont see the point in owning a handgun unless being in law enforcement or something.

Re: Guns
Like I have said before, people kill. It makes no difference what the weapon of choice is, gun, vehicle, knife, baseball bat, golf club.....enough of that.
I own several guns and they include pistols, rifles, shotguns. I haven't used them for several years, but one never knows when I'll get back into it. I have to use a rifle and shotgun for work. I find no problem with people owning or using these firearms, when used for the right purpose. Here, where I live, you are able to use almost any firearm for hunting purposes, OK the last time I checked you still could. Wether it is a pistol, rifle, shotgun, or blackpowder. They can be a lot of fun to use. I would like to try and shoot skeet or trap, but now isn't the right time.
So there is nothing wrong with the guns, just some of the nutballs that get ahold of them.

Re: Guns
I have guns for investments, & collections. I also have guns for sport, i have never needed them for protection since i left the military. As a avid hunter, i have guns of different calibers, but also i have guns i've never shot, nor do i plan to, just cuz they wud lose value if i did. I grew up around guns, & feel quite comfortable around them

Re: Guns
I don't like 'em...the only time in my life when there was a gun in the house, it's sole purpose was to protect the livestock from predators, even then I hated the use of them really.
I used more "friendly" ways to deter predators, the gun thing was just a back up deal.

Re: Guns
A person shouldn't have to have a gun in thier home to feel safe and protected. However, after Arizona passed a law where a concealed weapon could be carried home breakins and violent crime in general fell by about 50 percent.

Re: Guns
I was raised around guns and I know how to use them. Every gun in our house has a barrel lock on it so they would do us no good if there was a break in unless we were using the barrel as a baseball bat to the head...did I mention I was a fast pitch softball player in my youth, lol...
The best way to survive a violent attack is through quick thinking, if someone wants to hurt you in a home invasion, chances are in their favor from the element of suprise. Intruders don't ring your doorbell and say, "I was thinking I'd kill you while you are sleeping tonight, do you mind?"

I'm sure gun ownership differs with locations, I'm lucky to live in very low crime rate area.
There's allot of guns, but rarely ever is a crime committed with one.

Re: Guns
There are not enough police on the streets to be effective against major crime in most major populated areas. Recently after my 18 year old daughter was robbed sitting in her car in a park in a local small town, the investigating officer told me that the best they can do is triage law enforcement and that the perp would likely not be found or prosecuted. That was a very scary ordeal and makes for a very scary and sobering thought.
I think I will keep my guns handy.

UK gun crime might not rival that of the US, but the problem is frightening and growing.
Other than for use in the Police Force and Prison service, I'd be happy to see all other guns completely banned.

Yeah, I know! Let's ban all gun ownership. That way, the criminals who intend to harm others can get them on the black market and the law abiding citizens who go about owning a gun legally won't have the option to own one and protect themselves if they so choose! Yeah, I'll go for that.... NOT!
Just my 2 cents.

Except how will we keep the overpopulated red fox out of the chicken coops? Hell, I don't need an AK47 for that...too many hunters depend on hunting seasons to help feed their families in my area but we're talking huntin' rifles...I would like to see some sort of ban maybe on automatic machine guns, high caliber elephant guns and all those heavy jacketed specialty ammo thingies...(I don't know much about guns....)

Aww you're ok Moon, Guns (gun control) is gonna be a loaded...awww shit...a powder keg....well crap....everything comes out a big ole pun doesn't it...never mind ya'all know what I mean...
I think some when they say they would like to see a gun ban they are thinkin' in a way like John Lennon's "imagine"...okay John Lennon...puns and irony..
Anyway, in a perfect world, in a Utopia...only good people would have access to guns, then if the bad crazy don't have the guns, then good sane don't really need them then.... unless they have themselves a coop full of fine banties and Rhode Island Reds to protect, or are hunters for sport or food...
Some just want certain types of guns banned, but with black markets...that's a Utopian thought too I guess...
Hey, I have my own philosophy of life and death, but it's a very spiritual kind of thing that I can't really discuss here but sure..I'd like to see people NOT die from senseless violent deaths....but ya know....there is already a "ban" of sorts on any senseless violent acts of assault, murder and armed robbery...can't say that's working out real well...

You're absolutely right, Chaz... this topic was, is, and always will be a powder keg. In a perfect world, nobody would need weapons whatsoever. And I can understand wanting to ban certain types of guns from being purchased. Most people that I know own shotguns and use them for hunting. And they're not trophy hunters, thank goodness. Others that I know who own handguns use them at a shooting range or outside the city limits for target practice. For a lot of people, a sense of security is felt from owning either one. For some, shooting is a liesure sport... like golf! It's a terrible shame that guns fall in the hands of monsters but that will never change, unfortunately. This is a topic that's better debated with words, not typing. I love you all, y'all know that... but y'all also know where I stand on this. I honestly don't think that makes me a bad person.

Hell no you're not a bad person! You may be Texan and I may be Missourian, but we are cut from the same cloth.
I'm sure it's true for you that in our kind of communities, for centuries, non-gun people and gun people live as neighbors, belong to the same community organization, attend all the same local activities, attend church together, their children play together and the adults work together without ever stepping on each others toes and each respects the other for their right to own or not to own guns.
The only trophy hunters that hunt in our area drove 150 miles from the city to get here, the locals hunt for food and conservation reasons.

Re: Guns
my dad had a .22 caliber pistol when i was growing up, never used it for much. my brother's both had rifles for hunting, when they were younger. they "lost them" by the river bottoms. according to one of my brothers, they apparently were smoking weed and thought they saw the cops coming, they hid the guns and ran, but when they went to get them, they were gone....i think that they just pawned them for pot money, and were afraid to tell dad.
after they lost them, dad never wanted to buy me one. all i ever got was a daisy bb gun.
it's a good thing though, cuz i don't think i could intentionally kill anything other than a bug.

I have to agree with this. People kill people. The gun is only a tool. If you want to kill someone..you will use what ever is at hand to get it done. When is the last time you heard them call for a ban or control on Chevy because some A$$hole got mad or drunk and drove into a crowd that did get out of his way? You didn't and won't. Has Chicago Cutlery been called on to be banned because some person used a knife to injure or kill someone in a home break in??? Nope (at least not yet)
There are so many gun laws in effect now that the country doesn't need more of them...just enforce what we have. The honest citizen will comply, they're not the problem. The criminal is. Can honest Joe become a problem? Sad to say yes, but why should so many honest and responsible gun owners have to pay the price for the few idiots and the criminals. Believe me when I say that they will keep their guns and find more if ours are taken away. I have owned guns for 35yrs, been around them all my life and have carried one for 20+years. I have respect for what a firearm can do and was taught by my father to use/respect a gun. I hunt, shoot for fun also.
As the saying goes "You can have my gun when you pry my cold dead fingers from it's grip"
Sorry for being long winded

I have no objection to guns. As has been previously-and much more eloquently than I can discussed- guns don't kill people. people kill people. If one wants to kill another bad enough, they will find a way. I probably could not pull the trigger on a human or an animal; having no experience in the area of guns other than a bb or pellet gun, I couldn't speak to the pros or cons.
Do I feel safe with one (or more) in the house? Yep. I do.
Don't want them in your home, that's fine, but please, don't take away my right to choose to have one.
