Legal age
Are there any "Legal age" laws that you think need to be raised or lowered?
Like 16 being the legal age to drive, 18 to vote, 18 to join a branch of military service, 21 to drink....

Re: Legal age
Since I'm well past all of those ages my comments are along the lines of this...
Sixteen is an acceptable driving age but I believe the training time should be extended and mandatory. It used to be a class in school and back then we didn't seem as wreckless as the kids are today (again, possibly showing my age).
The voting age shouldn't be changed, if you can sign your life away and join Uncle Sam you should be able to vote for the people that are making your decisions for you.
Drinking...that is a tough one. If people are going to drink it is likely to happen before they turn 21...it is hard to police.

Re: Legal age
In SD, a person can get a drivers license at 14. There's many restrictions on it though, and don't think it should be changed. I'm sure this is from the farm thing.
What would I like to see changed? Laws that aply equally to everyone as they do to truck drivers. IE: the legal alcohol limit, now .08 most everywhere while drivers are limited to .04. Require all drivers to be pee tested after any injury accident. This list could go one for a long time. ---hehehe
I'd also like to see states enforce and increase the taxes on alcohol s they have for tobacco. After all, I know people that have been killed by drunk drivers, no one that's been killed by a smoking while while driving.

Re: Legal age
Over here the following applies:
1. To drink alocohol age 18
2. To get married age 16
3. To drive a car, used to be age 17 but they have just changed it to age 18
4. To have an homosexual relationship age 21.
5. To vote age 18
It baffles the mind completely. Those who are homosexual, know this from an early age but are banned from enjoying the wonders of a close relationship.
How can anyone have a mature enough attitude to get married at 16 and cope with what married life can throw at you!
So to sum it up: Get married at 16, get a place to live then buy a car, legally drive it at 18, whilst buying alcohol on the way home from the voting office, and on your 5th wedding anniversary can tell everyone it was a mistake because you are gay and always have been!!!
It makes no difference UK or US, the politicians of this world run it according to what they need!!!

Re: Legal age
age 14 is fine for driving with the provided restrictions that lift at 16... but i'd like to see full driving tests performed throughout life instead of the "heres my money I can still drive well". or at least at dictated ages... say 30, 45, and 60. etc. I'm more scared of these 5mph grannies behind the wheel than the lead foot teens.
drinking? i say lower it to 18. reguardless of the age limit kids will do it.... it the whole forbidden aspect that's so appealing anyhow. I know i've barely done any drinking after turning legal, not the case before hand.

Re: Legal age
I always defined the age of majority as the age when you were allowed to enlist in the military. If you are old enough to defend and die for your homeland, then you are old enough to enjoys its rights and benefits.
At age 18, I was soldier. By 19 I was in a combat zone. By age 21, I was all those nasty names that were used in the 60s and 70s about soldiers.
But, I was not allowed to buy a beer off post until I was 21?

Re: Legal age
Legal age of consent for sex here is 14, personally I think it's too low.

Re: Legal age
i don't know about anywhere else, but in Mn, you can serve alcohol at age 18, but can't buy it until age 21? isn't that kinda pointless? you'd think that an underage drinker might convince an 18 year old to serve them, rather than some one who is older????

Roxy, at least being homosexual is legal in England -- there are several states here in the "good ole" USA where it's still officially illegal at any age! Not that it's enforced, of course... but it's amazing what laws are still on the books...
