Who's the Daddy?

Re: Who's the Daddy?
If known, yes. It saddens me that men have less and less rights when it comes to children. Even the law on anonimity as a sperm doner is something I don't agree with - I'd see it as an 18 year long lottery to see if you've suddenly got rich kids

The case is kind of being hijacked by the anti- gay & lesbian brigade now, which I don't agree with either. It was a sad, freak occurrence and it's bound to be very psychologically tough on the couple in question but I don't think it should raise too much debate.

It's not like anybody compares birth cirtificates before getting it on?

Re: Who's the Daddy?
I did hear about this, quite shocking!
I have heard of other cases where a couple discovered while planning their wedding that there were too closely related.
On one hand, yep...I do think that DNA paternity testing should be done on all infants. Most of the time now, if any doubt is there, testing is done, and hopefully gone are the days where a pregnant women who's had multiple partners and just pick and chose which man she wants to name as the father.
I think it's important that everyone know their own family's medical history, and who their relatives are.

Re: Who's the Daddy?
I think in cases like twins being separated then the parents names should be given to the children. This is such a sad story.
I don't agree with donors being named as they do this selfless act to help families and they don't want a child knocking on their door 18 years later. And will courts get involved for child maintenance back pay!!!!
The donor side of things should be left anonymous, unless all parties concerned are happy to be named.
I have a friend who donated eggs when she was 20, a girl has just found her and it has ripped her family apart and devastated the girls family. A very sad outcome for someone who just wanted to help a family have a child of their own. Sorry, libs went slightly

Re: Who's the Daddy?
I think....I think I've heard or read that there is a data base being built that will allow children of donors and adoption to know if they have siblings out there somewhere and discloses important medical histories without disclosing the name of the donor or biological parents, the donors/parents are named by case numbers only.

Re: Who's the Daddy?
Just to clarify what I meant... I think that donors names should be kept so that once the child is 18 they can try to find the biological parent, but only if the parent consents. There should be no question of child maintenance *ever* for the donor parent.

I beleive this data base allows for donors/parents to consent to being known to any children inquiring, or they can choose to be kept anonymous...I think this kind of thing is long overdue but I quess technology and computers just took awhile to catch up with medical fertility technology and the adoption agencies.

Re: Who's the Daddy?
I think that knowing your biological parents is a human right., regardless of how you were brought into the world.

Re: Who's the Daddy?
But sadly some parents have to get that little bit of help, and that will stop if donors can be named.
The parents are the ones who bring you up, you can be that childs mum or dad even if you weren't the sperm or egg.
I have strong beliefs about this matter as i have family members who have used a donor and it's easy to say everyone has the right to know their parent, but if a donor stops donating, that child will never get the chance to be born

Re: Who's the Daddy?
Since the beginning of time adoptions have been private. My father who will be 75 next week was adopted and he never found out his parent's identity. I have very mixed emotions about the disclosure of parent's names. For our family for medical reasons it certainly would have been helpful to know something about his family. However, what if his mother had been a pregnant teenager that was sent away to have a baby she could not keep...her life may have been ruined if that child showed up on her doorstep many years later.

I became pregnant in college and although I kept my child and raised him (22 years old now). There was never any question of if I wanted to be his mother but if I had somehow thought he would have been better off with another set of parents than with me I would have made that choice for him...what a sacrifice for a mother to make...it wasn't my decision to put him up for adoption but if you did, the pain of what you gave up may be far too difficult to face.

Re: Who's the Daddy?
He is a lucky boy having such a wonderful mum.
It must be a hard thing to do for any parent giving a child up, especially when they don't have a choice, which is really sad. I have donated eggs to couples who can't have children. it isn't a pleasent process to go through, but the pleasure it will bring a couple is worth it.
I don't want anyone finding me years down the line as i have detached myself from any paternal feelings. I wanted to help someone have the gift of a child as it is not their fault they can't have a baby the easy way.

Re: Who's the Daddy?
definitley a very difficult subject for many ppl...but, my opinion for what its worth...yeah, i think knowing who your biological parents are should be a must....what happens as a child ages and or moves on to adopted parents or other...is separate from the knowledge of "where do i come from"....or rather "who do i come from"...
