Freaky January
Freaky...we had a few sunny days with the temp up in the 70's, then a night of scary wicked tornado producing storms.
Spent that night on the couch with the tv on, every 15 minutes the emergency broadcasting beeping would come on and give us updates...ya know, when tornado warnings and watches happen during the day it doesn't really freak me out, I can just look outside and get a good fix on what's up, whats coming,etc....but when the warnings and watches go all through the dark night, I guess there's just less control, I have to depend on sirens and broadcasts of doppler.
Now that the storms have passed, we are back to partly sunny, temps up in the 50's....it's all freaky for January....I should be snow bound and curled up in front of a fire...not watching for tornados at night and enjoying spring like weather during the day...

I feel for you, I don't think I could klive in a tornado area. It is the only storm I fear, so unpredictable, others you can prepare for

Oh pook, I agree, I grew up in the midwest, and tornado scared me all the time. There was no place to hide. I like it better now. Here it may rain and flood, but if you are smart you just avoid those areas. A few dust storms can be scary but I haven't found anyone who doesn't understand why you are late if you were waiting out the sand.

Re: Freaky January
I guess this was our January thaw. Temps in the mid 40's, ah yes I can see the beaches about to open. But now they are saying to get ready for the deep freeze, highs only in the single digits and sub zero lows, again. I wonder if we'll even get above zero, we'll see. I hope that is it for this winter then. Gawd I hate when it gets that cold out, but its usually only for a couple weeks then things start to warm up for spring.

Re: Freaky January
I do have a basement under a brick house....just means heavier rubble to dig you out of I say...
I explained once to NRG how tornado warnings go in my house with all our pets...it goes like this...
Grab nearest couple of cats, open basement door, throw down the first cats, go get a couple more...open basement door, first couple of cats run out while throwing in the second couple of cats...repeat futilely until sirens stop and storm has passed....

At my house it would go something like this. Grab the kids, have tons of games and things to entertain them. Play Candy land, Shutes and Ladders, Monopoly Junior...then after the first five minutes I'd hear, "I'm bored." I am not nearly as much fun as I used to be in a good game of peek-a-boo...

Re: Freaky January
I must be one of the few that just LOVE violent weather, never have experienced a hurricane but would like to. I was introduced to storm chasing at a very young age by my grandpa and loved every minute of the storm. I once chased a storm from MM 47 on I-35 to Ft Smith, Ark. Another time I chased a storm from Ardmore, Ok. to Paris,Tx. I was picked up by a Texas State Trooper and we chased the storm to Texarkana,Tx. Talk about your adrenalin rush

Re: Freaky January
Well, I can't say I LOVE violent storms, nor do I ever wish to be in their path, but I do understand the fascination but it's more of a being in awe of and respecting the fierceness of them.
I've seen total devastation from them, I fear for my family scattered about the state when the season hits.
I've seen the long road to recovery when a relative was buried under the rubble of a storm shelter when a tornado wiped out the entire small town she lived in.

Don't get me wrong I have a very healthy respect for storms. I've had more than my share of near strikes from lightening, so much so that no one wants to be around me during a storm, haha. I've seen the destruction a storm can do and have assisted in many recovery operations, and I would not wish the devastation on anyone.

Re: Freaky January
Oh I do understand shadow, a tornado and the storms that carry them are nuttin' less than a mesmerizing natural phenomenon. There is true nature and beauty in those deadly skies for sure.
Discovery Channel just ended a series "Storm Chasers" I watched every bit of it, every week.
One guy was only riding along to capture actually being inside a tornado for IMAX..that was his job, the rest of the team was doing it to collect valuable data to help improve early warning and radar.
Every storm they chased it was an emotional tug of war with themselves...they'd get excited, cheer, whoop and all that one minute, then catch themselves and feel like shit for cheering about a storm forming that they know could possibly and will most likely ruin and take lives...it was a constant up and down thing for them.
They would be high fiving a storm and the data they collected one second, and the next...cry with shame at the devastation it left.
