OK you puter geeks
I'm looking at getting a laptop, mainly for traveling. Now my desktop has XP, and would like the laptop to be able to share from one to another would be nice. I have lots of photo's, cd music, and a couple programs that I would like for the two 's to share. Now with the intro of Vista, which I've heard is not all that, can I file share between the two with different operating systems, or do I have to keep both of them the same?

Re: OK you puter geeks
To be honest, if you have to ask if there is much differenece between Vista and XP then the answer is no...
There are huge difference in various ways, but nothing you can't adjust to quickly... my mum recently moved to Vista, so if she can anyone can
No problem with file transer either, just do it pretty much the same as you would with any other computer, whether it be by network, memory stick or cd/dvd

Re: OK you puter geeks
Thanks Hap. I wasn't sure, so it makes me feel a little more at ease.

One thing you may run into problems with your old software not working on Vista may have to buy new software. Some of the older printer will not work in Vista.
Hate to tell you this but it is a fact and if you are spend your hard earned money you may want to check to make sure what youhave now will work on Vista.

That's true too, there's a utility you can download from the microsoft website to check your current computer's compatibility with Vista. I know you're getting a new machine and all, but it'll tell you if you have software that won't work.

Re: OK you puter geeks
I have a vista and what they say is true but i like it. When I hooked up my printer and wireless lynxs, I was unable to install software on my own. I had to call help desk but was no big deal. I do like it, my brother has an apple lap top and he likes a lot of the features i have more than his apple

Re: OK you puter geeks
I didn't really want to get an apple anyway. Then I would have to buy two computers, new software, etc. I would have way to much stuff to re-type in.

The photos being shared is no problem at all. You may run into a slight problem on the music, depending on if you downloaded it or ripped it from a CD. If you ripped it (own the actual CD) then it should be no problem to play on vista. If you downloaded the music file, then you may have an issue depending on where you got it from. Keep a backup of the file because Vista will just delete the music file if it considers it "pirated".
You actually can load XP programs on Vista. As long as the program installs on the operating system, you can use something called the Program Compatibility Wizard to make the computer run as if is was XP while it is running that program. The only thing that can prevent the programs from working is if they cannot install on the computer, which almost all XP programs can. Any hardware that you want to share between the computers will only require the XP drivers on the XP computers and the Vista driver on the Vista computer, but not all hardware does both.
Glad to be of help!
