Proposed law in Massachusettes
Mass. is proposing a law that it will be a crime to physically punish a child in your own home. Has this gone to far. does it mean a parent can be arrested for a lil slap on the behind or hands. Where do you draw the line and who decides.
I got smacked as a kid (not often I was an LOL)and I feel like I'm better for it.
I'm a firm believer that violence of any sort only teaches a kid that violence is the solution to any problem. But a smack on the butt !!!!!! Let's get real

Re: Proposed law in Massachusettes
I still believe that toddlers too young to understand verbal "explanations" need that little whack on their padded diapered fanny when it comes to things like understanding NOT to touch a hot stove, pan, whatever could harm them, to teach them that there are dangerous consequences in their world....things that cannot be explained to someone who hasn't developed a vocabulary or communication skills...so...butt out Big G, making at-home spanking illegal could very well be what endangers the child.

Re: Proposed law in Massachusettes
Wonderful, let's teach the kids that if you do something wrong, there is no consequences for their actions. Those "time outs" are a joke. Being sent to your room is a real punishment, thats where all their toys are.
I think some law makers need a real time out, like time out of office.
There is nothing wrong with a little smack on the bottem or a slap on the hand.

Re: Proposed law in Massachusettes
I understand the reasoning because of all the abuse that is out there but they will end up arresting more good parents than abusers. Like Chazzy said, at an early age they can't communicate so a lil tap is necessary to communicate

Children and Youth representative once told me that a smack on the bottom is not considered abuse
Hmmmmmm wonder what made them change there minds
I got plenty of smacks on the bottom and with more than dad's hand and I think I turned out alright (maybe) lol

Re: Proposed law in Massachusettes
This has already happened thanks to the current abuse laws. Most areas if the kids doesn't like what the parnet tells them to do [for example] they actually challenge the parent to hit them and then they call Social Services.

While abuse laws are necessary, it went well beyond the intent long ago.

Re: Proposed law in Massachusettes
There's abuse...and then there's discipline. Two totally different things.

Reminds me of an episode of the Ozzy Osborne reality show where Sharon recalls a time when the daughter Kelly was much younger and called a child abuse hotline because Sharon slapped her for calling her names ...I quess these abuse hotline workers have some training, because after she talked to both, it was not reported any further as a case of child abuse.

Re: Proposed law in Massachusettes
I still remeber mine. My grandmother did one of two things depending on the severity, she either made me get a switch (that dang bush was bare by autumn every year, lol) or (and worse to me!) was a wooden spoon across my palm. If I did something to get the wooden spoon, it only took one lick and by golly, I didn't do it again!

Discipline is necessary. It has to be done or the world will only get more criminals, who only know what they want, not what is right and wrong, so NO, spanking should not be outlawed.

They would know because the kids would tell if they were pissed at the parents or an arsehole(as Lib would say)neighbor.

As i said, the current laws already reinforce this. Most kids would rather send thier parents to jail instead of behaving.--In many cases for nothing more than a smack on the ass.

Re: Proposed law in Massachusettes
I cant believe this. How the hell do you police something like this? and how many kids, when they couldnt get their own way, would scream "abuse"!!!!
I do not condone smacking as I had a very victorian father who took out his own temper when made cross on us but
I feel that without discipline there is no fear and without fear there is no respect.
The youth of today are growing up with complete lack of discipline, they are not fearfull of any figure of authority and they definately have no respect or even know what respect is.
I cannot think too far ahead as I have a 5 year and an 8 year old and I have no idea what kind of world they will grow up in. All I can do is raise them with manners, a sense of pride in what they do and respect for others and to treat people how they would like to be treated. Along with their Tae qwondo classes for defence I am hoping they will be ok.

Re: Proposed law in Massachusettes
They'll be fine because of the 2 of you. one thing sticks out in my mind from when I was a kid (pre-historic times LOL) If I did something wrong I was more afraid of dissappointing my parents than I was of the punishment.I didn't want to hurt them. I guess I loved and respected them. Kids don't have that today. If they don't get the love and respect from their parents, they don't know how to express it themselves. I think that's half the problem. Of course, just my opinion

If you put this in perspective. Most of our "legislators act like children most of the time anyway.

Re: Proposed law in Massachusettes
Seems like whose all said stuff in this thread so far agrees that idea is kinda overboard. I can see where they can kinda see/think that some parents MAY just go overboard on spanking , etc.. as far as if that was really something they deserved. Yet at the same time, like one's post earlier... if we don't get them disciplined sooner than later, soon the whole place will be filled with criminals and much worse. So I think spankings are allowed at times. Just goes to show whose the big dog in the house.
