Help Line
Thought it might be good to have a post where we can ask for advice on something.
A member may have a problem and another member maybe able to help.
For example, i'm going for an MRI scan on Wednesday, i am worried about the result, and don't know what to expect. Has anyone had an MRI on their head that can tell me what happens and how long it might take

Re: Help Line
I had an MRI done on my neck
I had to have the open MRI I found I was claustropobic
It took about a half hour and you have to lay perfectly still
they gave me headphones to listen to any radio station
Some places let you bring in your own CDS to listen too
It is loud at times but I dozed off a few times
I hope every thing is ok with you and nothing is seriously wrong
take care

Re: Help Line
Don't let it worry you too much HBG,the tech guys and doctors will go through all the options with you and will do everything to make you as comfortable as possible. Like Tiger said, you may get headphones to listen to some music.....but you also may be able to bring A friend who can talk to you over an inter comm.
Hope this will put you at ease and relieve some of the worry

Re: Help Line
I had one on my brain a few months ago. It is noisy and takes a bit of time. For mine they made 5 separate images each ranged in time from 1 to like 5 mins. and each made different loud knocking and banging noises. The place I went had these crappy headphones to ware and I got to pick my type of music but the quality was like the old toy close and play record players we had when we were young. Not much help! Anyway the whole process took like 45 mins. and I walked out with a CD with over 900 images of my brain. The way it works is each image is a differant level almost like a thin slice of your head. The first looks like your head is empty..which is kinda what I figured mine to look like! The with each additional layer you see more of the brain. The strangest think is the eye sockets! For me they also injected a dye into my blood to add contrast. All in all it's easy. Just think of me holding your hand the whole time...

Re: Help Line
I had one after the plane crash, they basically just slide you into this tube, there is no pain or anything. The biggest problem people have is if they don't like being in tight confined spaces, some have to be sedated. I had no trouble tho, I happen to like being inside tight, small spaces.....lol Don't worry HBG.... You'll be fine, i just know you will

I need my head sorted as i'm in a place where i know something is wrong, but when the specialists ask me if i have any questions, i'm to scared of the answers to ask!!! Yeah i know, i'm silly

Re: Help Line
I agree with everyone else, the MRI itself is kind of boring and staying still is the hardest part. What is hard is having to wait for results. I know you want instant information and those films are so detailed that it takes a radiologist time to read each one and then come to a decision. Then they have to send the decision to your doctor - which can take a couple of days because everything has to be sealed for "privacy". If I were you I would ask what day the results would be ready for you and plan stuff to do in the waiting days - something fun or busy!!

Re: Help Line
I have learned to not let it worry you so much until the time comes. Just do what you can do until then and take it from there.

Re: Help Line
I'm as claustrophobic as a person can get and I had an MRI done years ago. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. They gave me some headphones and put it on my favorite radio station. I closed my eyes and almost fell asleep. You'll be fine...

Re: Help Line
I know you have the "mind power" to endure the MRI..you know how...visualization, mind relaxation, etc... I've had several myself, I have to keep my eyes closed or I will have a severe anxiety effect from it.
Let us know how it goes.
