Avoiding embarrassment with technology?
I was just reading...43 percent of teens who use instant messaging, use it to avoid confrontations that they feel could embarrass them. They IM to ask for a date, accept or reject a date offer, or to break up with their boyfriend/girlfriend.
Wow, does make me wonder if our children are going to grow up with a severe lack of social skills, and a need to avoid any and all confrontations that might make them feel embarrassed or uncomfortable in any way.
Most adults I think, still need to do things face to face, or at least by phone, voice to voice.
I love email, we can keep in touch with family and friends easily at our convenience that way, but I think most adults when it comes to something that really matters, still believe in doing it face to face.

How right you are Chazzy! If today's children let the computer world rule their lives it will definitely be harder for them as they go through issues in life.

Geez, I remember that being a huge part of growing up and being a teen....learning how to ask for, accept or turn down a date with some social grace!
And breaking up with someone by text? It was considered damn rude to do it by phone instead of face to face.

Re: Avoiding embarrassment with technology?
We are finding that in class - they would rather send me an email, then to ask the question in class. I don't mind answering their questions, but that keeps the rest of the class from benefiting from the question. I think it would be better to use the "chat room or discussion room" so that the whole class hears both the question and the answer.

Re: Avoiding embarrassment with technology?
When we were kids we used to write letters to everyone. Thank you notes, invitations, love letters etc. etc. Isnt IM the modern day equivalent? I must admit it does seem to be taken a bit further these days, but isnt it easier to write something be it IM or email, dont you feel you can be honest and write from the heart, where as a face to face situation, do you really say what you want to?

I dunno... I think love letters and thank you notes are a little different than avoiding dealing with something face to face just because one doesn't want to take that chance to be embarrassed.
I think that at a young age especially, that learning important social and communication skills are pretty important, and even necessary in order to get along with others...like friends, co-workers, employees and employers and most importantly..our romantic interests.
